Frequently asked questions for residents

We have a FAQ specifically for Local Authorities officers here

When will the product be available in my area?

We are in touch with Local Authorities around the country to arrange trials. As the pavement is generally under the responsibility of the Local Authority’s highway department, we need their authorisation to install the Charge Gully channel. Once your Local Authority has approved the product we will be able to come to you. In the meantime, fill our Get Started Form to be added to our waiting list and we will let you know when Charge Gully is available in your area.

Note: If the pavement in front of your property is on private land (i.e. it is unadopted by your Local Authority and instead managed by your property management company), we are already able to install Charge Gully for you. Get in touch at hello@chargegully.com to arrange your installation.

Can I take part in a trial?

If you are interested in joining a trial, please fill in the Get Started Form and we will put you forward for a trial if your Local Authority is organising one, otherwise we will keep you on our waiting list until a trial becomes available where you live.

What if someone is already parked outside my house?

Most people only need to charge once or twice a week and so won’t need to park in front of their house every day.

Longer charging leads (10-15m) provide some flexibility which in most cases will reach a parking space either side of a vehicle parked right in front of your house. Note that this may be restricted if you have metal-cased street furniture (e.g. lamp post, electrical cabinet) in your vicinity due to the simultaneous-contact risk.

Sure, but I urgently need to charge?

Failing the solutions in the above, one of your neighbours will hopefully have their own Charge Gully available for use through Peer-to-Peer sharing platforms such as GoPlugable.

As a last resort, you may need to use a more expensive public charger.

Will Charge Gully fill up with rain?

Pavements are sloped to take rainwater away into the street drains. As the channel is installed flush with the pavement surface, the channel will have the same slope as the pavement, so water will drain away through the channel kerbside open end. The cover minimises the amount of rain entering the channel.

Can you install across a grass verge?

The addition of a narrow strip of concrete along the alignment of the channel could be envisaged however this would require more civil works and approval at the discretion of the Local Authority whose considerations may include ability to maintain the verge and cut the grass.

Do I need to apply for planning permission?

In most cases yes. As part of our fees, we will support your householder planning application and provide you with standard submission documents however please note that we do not cover the official planning application fees of £258-£300 depending on where you live in the UK. Note that these fees are covered by the £350 government’s cross-pavement grant when eligible.

How do I lock and unlock the lid?

On the day of the installation, we will provide you with a special key that locks and unlocks the channel lid.

How do I maintain the channel?

The channel can simply be cleaned of any leaves or other debris when needed. The gully is otherwise maintenance-free.

How sturdy is the channel?

Being made of marine grade anodised aluminium compliant with BS 124-3:2015, the channel is durable and resistant to corrosion and UV.

The channel withstands twice than the maximum wheel load of an articulated lorry in the UK.

Do you provide a guarantee?

In case of any product issues, Charge Gully will repair or replace the gully during the guarantee period. We provide a 7-years guarantee on the channel.

Insurance

The gully is designed to remove the trip hazard. Residents are required to take out an insurance that will cover them for injuries to third parties.
