How to Transition to EV Without a Driveway

The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is a pivotal step in reducing our carbon footprint and combating climate change. With even more focus on sustainable solutions as we head towards a net zero future, for the 40% of UK households without a driveway, the convenience and cost-effectiveness of home charging has been elusive- until now!

At Charge Gully, we have pioneered a cross-pavement gully, offering a game-changing solution that makes EV charging accessible to everyone, without the need for a driveway or unsafe charging solutions that could leave car owners vulnerable to lawsuits and more.

The Challenge of EV Charging Without a Driveway

Charging an electric vehicle at home is undoubtedly the most convenient and economical method, but this has traditionally been limited to those with driveways. For those without off-street parking, the alternative often involves driving to public chargers, which are five to ten times more expensive.

Apps and websites provide real time information on charging station locations and availability, but there is a need to plan charging in mind of demand when using public chargers

Alternatively, conventional cable protectors across pavements present trip hazards, and there are many dangerous alternatives being utilised by EV car owners. The Highways Act 1980 makes it illegal to place a wire or apparatus over, along or across a highway/pavement without consent from  the Local Authority. If someone tripped and injured themselves, you could be prosecuted and there may be liability under civil law. The Highway Code also now includes reminders to EV owners that charging cables for cars can present a trip hazard when not done safely.

The Future of EV Charging

Since 15th June 2022, new homes and buildings in England have been required to have EV charging points fitted in hope to reach zero emissions by 2050 (Homebuilding & Renovating). The new regulations mean that any building development with parking must have access to an electric car charging point, saving new home buyers hundreds of pounds. This will help those in the future access safe charging solutions.

Another key consideration for future charging options is the want to integrate sustainable energy sources as a means for EV charging. Solar panel installation is leading the way to a greener future, and so having a home charging solution that enables you to maximise the use of your renewable energy is proving a must for the future of EV charging. Vehicle-To-Home (V2G) technology also promises to further benefit having an EV charging from home. This also means that your charging options need to be ones that can accommodate ever-evolving capacities and advancements in charging technology.

Charge Gully: A Transformative Solution

Charge Gully addresses these challenges by providing a lockable, reliable  and eco-friendly cable channel that allows the safe extension of charging cables across pavements. Our innovative solution not only benefits individual users but also contributes to broader environmental and community goals. We are making the transition to EVs more accessible, reducing the impact of obstacles that had previously prevented the move to greener vehicle solutions. You can find out more about our mission here.

Not only is our Charge Gully safe, you are able to maximise home charging solutions, renewable energy and it is also designed to accommodate larger charging cables required for future technologies, with multiple benefits for everyone.

Benefits for Everyone

Addressing safety concerns, our innovative lockable channel eliminates the need for hazardous trailing cables, bumpy protector mats, or makeshift overhead solutions. This not only ensures a tidy and hazard-free pavement environment but also enhances the aesthetic appeal of the charging setup, contributing to a more visually pleasing and organised streetscape.

In addition to prioritising safety and aesthetics, our Charge Gully emphasises the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of home charging. Home charging remains the most economical option, with public chargers averaging eight times the cost of domestic charging. By registering for peer-to-peer charging networks, users can further maximise the financial benefits by earning money through sharing their chargers with neighbours, an approach reminiscent of the Airbnb model for EV chargers. This not only makes EV ownership more financially viable but also fosters a sense of community engagement.

By providing affordable and accessible EV charging for households without driveways, we aim to actively contribute to meeting climate and net zero targets. Fully recyclable and free of plastics, our Charge Gully sets a standard for sustainable and environmentally friendly charging solutions, allowing users to leverage excess power from solar panels and promoting responsible energy practices. In essence, our Charge Gully is not just a charging solution; it's a catalyst for positive change, offering a glimpse into a future where EV charging is both accessible and environmentally conscious.

At Charge Gully we are proud to stand at the forefront of a transformative movement, making home EV charging a reality for everyone. By overcoming the challenges faced by those without driveways, our innovative solution ensures that the benefits of EV ownership are accessible for all.
